Thinking about a new housing strategies for living in the future means not only giving of physical responses, but also initiate a series of processes of long-term development.

[Paradigms: new global drivers] Therefore our proposal is driven and enhanced by a series of global drivers from which we imagine a possible way of residence, that investigates a revolutionary relationships between human beings,  environment, technologies. The space resulting is a vision of this revolution so to crumble traditional relationships between outside/inside, socio-economic diversity, change/adaptability, public/private, communication/connectivity, permanence/impermanence.

[Process: from building to green]

The structure of any western city (i.e. Venice Mainland) is based on the centrality of the physical heritage, made of hard concrete, and based on the myth of production. On the base of the new paradigms, our project starts from the assumption of the global changes. For instance - in the context of the Venice lagoon - the increase of sea level and the loss of biodiversity are the driving forces able to generate a  new scenarios in the urban order and therefore able to generate opportunities for more suitable ways of living for people.

We propose a urban scenario which address the city towards urban resilience, able to control the risks generated by climate change, to increase biodiversity within the urban fabric, and to design a new cycle of water resources.  The citizen’s safety and amenity will raise awareness towards environment, but also enable new business processes around the city, while respecting the future of the next generations.

Our desire is to give a revolutionary approach to urban architecture, that is understandable and handled to all citizens meant as potential stakeholders.

All of this will be the physical ground to generate a diverse human settlement within 2050.

[Morphology: imagine a new map of  Venice Mainland]

In the simulation context of Venice Mainland, fast grown as a city agglomeration in the last  50 years, we will let the water penetrate between asphalt road and concrete residential buildings, to create a new morphology of lagoon water and land, and we will let it flood.

In general terms the whole morphology, the context we can picture right now, is considered as a fake reality, by the forces of the next changes.

[FUNCTIONS: HOW IT WORKS]

The Bio Social Fiber is based on integration and connectivity between ecological and social systems; it is the key breakthrough toward the cultivation of a healthy ecosystem. Benefits of Bio Social Fiber  include the following interdependent, multifunctional systems:

Environmental: Beyond a sustainable water system, the project creates a significant city-wide reduction of urban heat island effect; increased organic filtration of pollutants and CO2 in the air; filtration of pollutants and heavy metals out of rainwater.

Energy: Reducing levels of runoff entering storm-sewers significantly reduces energy loads because pumping and treating rainwater in a single centralized location is energy intensive.

Social: The project evenly spreads the amenity of open green space throughout the city, stitching together historic ethnic and economic boundaries. Public space is created for diverse socialization and play.

[VISION: HOUSING OF TOMORROW]

In a period of severe crisis of identity for the western city, where people do not recognize itself nor in architecture, nor in public spaces, we believe it is the time for a revolutionary breakthrough in the the way of housing and living, springing out from the highest human values, an illuminated / long-term awareness of global changes and the need of inclusiveness of our society.

[TOOL: FIBER]

Our project proposes a Bio Social Fiber as a tool in order to activate the described purposes.

The Fiber is a tool for urban modeling that accepts the incoming changes (global drivers) with an economically rational approach that, with the smallest intervention, would have the largest effect. In fact the Fiber recognizes that existing urban structures must not be destroyed recklessly but instead a way needs to be found to re-use them in practical ways.

Within this urban structure will move with innovative means of public-private partnerships but also we will move to walking and cycling distances. It will trigger a process in which is increased comfort and local attenuation of the heat island.

Along the fibers arise at fixed points of the "trees" that will be new points of social cohesion for citizens where they can spend their free time in activities as diverse libraries, cinemas, gymnasiums, auditoriums, restaurants, universities, schools, etc. . etc..

The Bio Social Fiber is  key element for a renewal mobility, a new highways, for the creation of social spaces, for food production: for living.
